RIIFF HONOURS COMPOSER KLAUS BADELT

August 8th 2009 02:53

At the top of the opening night at the 13th RHODE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL, the Crystal Image Award was presented by RIIFF to composer Klaus Badelt. Klaus has composed scores for Hollywood blockbusters such as Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Time Machine, Starship Troopers, Ned Kelly, K-19: The Widowmaker. Poseidon, and many more. Klaus recently signed with the Weinstein Company and is also acknowledged as the composer for the closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics and recently been working in Macau, China putting the finishing touches on the first-of-its-kind film installation in the world: The Bubble(TM), a 360-degree theater that will serve as the front door to the largest casino in China called "The City of Dreams".

RIIFF's Opening Night Program saluted the "Art of the Short Film," a signature theme for the Festival with all films screened in 35mm surround sound. The films represented an array of genres representing RIIFF's unique status as the lone film festival in New England that is a qualifying event for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences "Oscar". With more than 7,000 total film festivals worldwide there are only 63 granted this prestigious distinction.

"It has been a pretty sensational year for us," said RIIFF Executive Director George T. Marshall, "Entries have been up 24% over last year and have been entered from all over the world. The films submitted this year have run the gamut in themes, styles and filmmaking techniques.

With two days left to run in this years festival, you still have time to get out and view some amazing shorts from all around the world.

Tonight’s Pick.

9:30 PM Fifty Dead Men Walking
Kari Skogland 2008| 117 min. Cable Car Cinema

Inspired by an incredible true story, "Fifty Dead Men Walking" is set in Belfast in 1980 where the Irish Republican Army is waging war against the British. Martin McGartland is a young small-time Belfast hustler recruited by a wily British intelligence agent to infiltrate the IRA. Martin quickly uses his natural instincts as a con man to get inside the IRA and starts feeding information to the British, saving hundreds of lives in the process. But with each successful mission, Martin becomes increasingly in danger of being caught and exposed. The IRA is ruthless, and once an infiltrator has been exposed he becomes a "dead man walking." As Martin becomes consumed by his double life, and his British handlers threaten to sell him out if he refuses to continue his counter intelligence work, he is plunged into a dangerous game in which the stakes could not be higher.

The film was a Gala Presentation at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.
