Rooftop Films and Sweden's Music Doc festival present a special screening of music and documentary films from Scandinavia, plus a live performance by Norway's extraordinary Hanne Hukkelberg. It isn't quite summer yet, but that doesn't mean you can't head on up to the roof at Open Road Rooftop this Friday for a special presentation of Knut Eric Jensen fantastic documentary, Cool & Crazy, a portrait of the dedicated members of Norway's Berlevag Male Choir. Knut Erik Jensen's thoroughly charming docu-musical - dubbed the 'Arctic Buena Vista Social Club' - has been a smash hit in its native Norway and a favourite at film festivals the world over. It tells the story of the distinguished male voice choir of BerlevĂĄg, one of Norway's most exposed and northerly fishing villages (and the setting for Isak Dinesen's 'Babette's Feast').

Prior to the film, Hanne Hukkelberg will perform her mesmerizing music live. Hukkelberg is one of Scandinavia's newest shining stars. In Pitchfork's review of her latest album, they declare that Hukkelberg's "tightly orchestrated pop can be so intricate that it becomes interactive (7.2)."
ABOUT Cool & Crazy
Jensen's fascinating film paints a warm, affecting and funny portrait of the choir's diverse and sometimes eccentric members - who range in age from 29 to 96 - and includes footage of some of their most stirring performances, set against a backdrop of spectacular arctic landscapes.
A remarkable tale of an inspirational group of people, Cool & Crazy is a unique and extraordinary film. This screening is co-presented with Music Doc. 2010 is Music Doc's fifth year as Sweden’s most prominent music documentary film festival. To celebrate our anniversary they are coming to New York to bring you top quality Nordic music documentaries. The event takes place at various locations in New York, April 15-18. Music Doc started in Malmö, in the south of Sweden, in 2005. Screening some of the top music documentaries at the time it pleased a need that had been growing in Sweden. The audience expanded with every year and soon the festival spread to Stockholm and Gothenburg.
Now, as a mature 5 year old festival, Music Doc is ready to take on New York. Music Doc will this year screen some of the most interesting and inspiring music documentaries from the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland) including personal portraits and shorter tales all over New York.
The ambition of Music Doc is to show the entire width of Nordic music culture, including male choirs from the north of Norway in Cool and Crazy, the exhibitionistic frontman Ola Salo from Swedish pop band The Ark (in Ola Svensson Superstar) and a icelandic portrait of Iceland’s diverse music scene in Screaming Masterpiece.
