ROOFTOP FILMS LOOKING MORE MUSICIAL ACCOMPANIMENT

January 15th 2009 05:37
For those of you already in the know, music has always been a major part of the motion picture industry.

From the very beginnings over 100 years ago., music helped to set the mood. Silents were accompanied by at the very least a sole pianist and even by full piece orchestral arrangements complementing the action up on the screen. Some of the biggest movies ever made have relied heavily on their musical interludes throughout the course of the action. From THE WIZARD OF OZ (Somewhere over the Rainbow), CASABLANCA (You must Remember This) on to THE GODFATHER, THE GRADUATE (Mrs Robinson) and THE STING and even today with such Box Office smashes such as FORREST GUMP and TITANIC we all like a little music with our movies.

Rooftop Films summer season can stretch for almost 6 months each year in New York and most sessions regularly sell out. And they are currently looking for bands for their 2009 season. Surely there is nothing better than performing your music live on a rooftop with the sun setting in the distance and your image projected on a massive screen behind you. If your going to be in New York this summer and you want to be part of the talent performing to a big crowd with a fantastic urban backdrop send in your music today – www.rooftopfilms.com. If you have any questions about bookings, submitting directly to Rooftop contact Music and Outreach Manager Danielle Kourtesis at music@rooftopfilms.com.

Some of the artists that have appeared at ROOFTOP include The Mountain Goats, Chairlift, Califone, O'Death, Titus Andronicus, Phosphorescent, Frances, David Wingo, members of Fugazi, TV on the Radio, The Bravery, Vic Thrill, The Double, Parts and Labor, and even a performance by acclaimed pianist Bruce Levingston.

Lately a lot of film festivals have decided to take this idea a little further, providing live entertainment as part of their festivities. At the recent Canadian Film Festival held late last year in Sydney, specific venues where chosen to add a little balance to the evening. One film screened in a pole dancing club, another in a niteclub. Bondi Open Air screening at the famous BONDI BEACH asks for submissions from artists to complement their films each year.

Rising Talents are now gaining more and more exposure through this not so new forum as filmmakers and musicians become conscious of the opportunities available. A small time band meets a small time filmmaker and the two suddenly become part of one creative team that holds endless opportunities. Every event becomes an opportunity for networking and it is no longer uncommon to see business cards and email addresses exchanged over the course of the evening.

The bottom line to all this is that success only comes with getting yourself out there and seen. While the internet offers opportunities to get your face out there, there is still really no substitute for face to face contact. And as the success of festivals continues to grow, so do the opportunities. To misquote a well known phrase in the film industry – ‘There are no small parts, only small actors’. Same goes for musicians.

Have a look at what’s out there in your local area and you might well be surprised at what fate awaits you.

Bondi OpenAir screens over the Australian summer from January 22 until March 14. While most spots have already been filmed, it is never too late to send in your music. Schedule changes and drop outs often leave spots open at festivals Details at www.bondiopenair.com.au.

Have a quick search on line to find a festival nearby, and while your at it, get out and see what movies they have scheduled.
