August 15th 2008 16:08
Rooftop Films based in New York is looking towards a musical weekend with tonights offering a great documentary about how a band can overcomeall obstacles that stand in their way including learning disabilities to keep it rockin, followed by Saturdays narrative about a husband and wife team's rise tto fame covering Neil Diamond songs before misfortune strikes. You can also sign up for a karaoke session if you feel so inclined. For me, I think I would need more beer than they would be willing to provide!

“A triumph of disfunctionalness!” —Wreckless Eric

Heavy Load are a UK punk band, and like any emerging band they’re subject to the combustible flux of ego, ambition, fantasy, expectation and desire. The singer’s an emotional sweetheart, fawning over his shy girlfriend, but at times he’ll ruin a recording session by screaming curses into the mix and giggling. The guitar player keeps an even keel, in his playing and in his life, but he’s been known to be so lax as to drift off in the woods on nature hikes he’s supposed to be leading, not even noticing when his friends cheer him on. And the drummer is fierce on the kit, but longs to sing and play guitar and make his own songs, though sometimes he’s a bit scared to get on a high stage.

Heavy Load have been around for nine years, steadily building a niche following but never truly breaking through to the mainstream. But the members of the band have found happiness, a sense of purpose and joy, in making music. They are unique in that the lack of success hasn’t dampened their spirit, in part, perhaps, because the band is made up of musicians with and without serious learning disabilities.

As they move out of the ghetto of disability club nights to test whether their dreams can survive in the mainstream, this hilarious and charming documentary captures the excitement, sweat and romance of playing in a band through the eyes of these very unique characters.

Watch a trailer and meet the band on IFC.com.

Z Rock (IFC TV | 20:00)
Z Rock is a 10-episode semi-scripted, comedy series that follows a group of musicians leading a double life: by night they’re a hard-partying rock band and by day they’re a Wiggles-style kids’ party band. Z Rock is loosely based on the real lives of its three New York based stars, brothers Paulie Z and David Z, and lifelong friend Joey Cassata and their actual band, Z02, giving a satirical look at the dark underbelly of the rock n’ roll dream.

IFC Season Premiere on Sunday, August 24, 11:30PM.

PROGRAM | SIGN UP FOR KARAOKE

Song Sung Blue (Greg Kohs | Wisconsin | 1:27:00)
Join us for a karaoke celebration of the music of Neil Diamond followed by a beautiful documentary about two American dreamers who fought their whole lives to make people happy and to forget their problems and worries by playing the music of one of America’s great crooners. Filmmaker Greg Kohs goes backstage into the personal lives of a brave couple - from their humble beginnings over 20 years ago to the threshold of fame, from disaster to rebirth, through to the most dramatic chapters in the lives of these authentic American dreamers.

Kohs first encountered Lightning & Thunder in 1993 while directing a documentary for Harley-Davidson. Lightning was belting out Sweet Caroline to a crowd of grizzled bikers dancing their chaps off.

A few years later, Kohs began documenting Lightning and Thunder’s journey, hoping he could capture some of the enchanting enthusiasm he had witnessed in the bar that night—admittedly harboring a deep desire to help them achieve their unlikely dreams. Song Sung Blue captures the uniquely American ability to invent one's self and strive for a seemingly impossible goal. It’s about fleeting celebrity and love and about a couple who manages to maintain their passion for one another amid the vicissitudes of life.
