The seventh annual Historic Harlem Park Film Festival concludes next week at Harlem Meer in Central Park (110th street between 5th and Lennox). On August 6th, Rooftop is proud to present Zeitgeist films' Trouble the Water. The winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Trouble the Water tells the story of an aspiring rap artist and her streetwise husband who are trapped in New Orleans by deadly floodwaters. Armed with a video camera, they show what survival is all about when they seize a chance for a new beginning.

Kimberly Rivers Roberts and her husband Scott had just gotten a video camera a few weeks before Hurricane Katrina hit their neighborhood, New Orleans' 9th Ward. Trouble the Water, directed by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal (co-producers of Fahrenheit 911 and Bowling For Columbine), includes Kim and Scott's astonishing footage documenting the experience. With overwhelming compassion and honesty, it tells a story that echoes the lives of too many people in America today—those whose lives were ruined (or lost) to Katrina, and those across the country who are being left behind by an uncaring government.

Trouble the Water opens theatrically in New York on August 22nd with a nationwide release to follow. This preview screening on August 6th is free and open to the public, and the filmmakers and Kim and Scott Roberts will be present for a Q and A following the film.

Prior to the film, Ms. Roberts (aka Black Kold Medina), will perform live. Transportation and accomodations for Ms. Roberts, her husband Scott Roberts and her backup singer Trichell Williams were provided for by the ASCAP Employees For Relief Fund, a non-profit fund designed to assist deserving music-related groups and individuals, who have slipped through the net of traditional big charitable organizations. No other music organization has an employee fund such as this. ASCAP employees have generously donated money along with ASCAP members and other music industry people, and all contributions are matched by ASCAP.

When Francisco, a teenager from Harlem, is admitted to an upstate boarding school on scholarship, he is torn between his life at home—his loyal girlfriend and his jealous best friend—and the new environment. As he tries to leave his troubles in Harlem behind, his best friend Brandon puts his own life in danger—partly to test his own ability to hustle, and partly as a loyalty test to Francisco.

This gritty, charming and dynamic narrative feature was created as a collaboration between director Greg Takoudes and at-risk youth at the East Harlem Tutorial Program. The screenplay is based on months-long writing workshops with the teenagers, who then starred in the movie, and—when they weren't acting in scenes—helped crew the set. “I wanted to turn these teens into filmmakers,” Takoudes said in IndieWire, “to teach them film skills, and make our movie in a way that the creative responsibility for the film rested as much with the teens, as with me. I thought that if they understood this responsibility, that they would rise to the occasion. And they did.” The film was shot in the streets where they hang out and in the apartments where they live—and now Rooftop Films and El Museo del Barrio invite you to see it in that same neighborhood.

Sat., August 9th, 2008 I'll Come Running |

Pelle (Jon Lange) is a Danish tourist in Texas, “a kitsch paradise, where they execute the retarded.” Veronica (Melonie Diaz) is a waitress in a tacky Tex-Mex joint. She takes him home, but they go to bed in separate rooms. Now they both have second thoughts about having second thoughts. Through a closed door, they wait expectantly, sexual tension building.

The blossoming affair between Veronica and Pelle—or Lisa and Millhouse, as they call each other, to help overcome language difficulties—is a delight to watch because it’s believable but unexpected. They flirt and dig at each other, get serious then laugh, a perfect distillation of what fast, passionate relationships are like: sharp, sweet, funny, then suddenly painful, and ultimately blissful.

Spencer Parsons, a Rooftop veteran (Resolution, 2002; Once and Future A**hole, 2005; recipient of a 2007 Rooftop Filmmakers’ Fund grant), has crafted his debut feature with wit and poignancy, lending remarkable weight to an unusual love story, and coaxing stunning performances from the entire cast. There is a glorious importance to their one-night stand, to the Viking Ship Museum, to a hand-rolled cigarette traded for a paint pen. Because through the sadness and difficulty, there is still joy, there is still laughter, there is still the possibility of love.
