Russian Resurrection 2010 Da!

August 17th 2010 03:04
The vodka is on standby; and what a star-studded line-up of Russki films awaits the opening of Thursday nights Russian Resurrection.

The nationwide Russian cinematic feast will feature 29 films over 32 days, including 17 new releases, award-winners and box office record-breakers which range from historical epics to moving dramas, adventures, comedies and for the first time, a 3D animation feature film, Belka & Strelka: Space Dogs in 3D (2010).

Director Andrei Kavun will return to Australia bringing with him Russian starlet Lyanka Gryu to celebrate the world premiere of his brand new, award-winning feature film, Parental Guidance (2010), as well as his latest blockbuster, Kandahar (2010). Also on international debut at the Festival is Dmitry Meskhiev’s Man at the Window (2010), the new romantic comedy which will officially kick-off the Festival in Sydney and Melbourne.

Other stunning cinematic gems include, How I Ended This Summer (2009), from director Aleksei Popogrebsky, featuring the young thesp Gregory Dobrygin in the joint Silver Bear-winning performance alongside Sergei Pukepalis; the box-office breaking action-flick Black Lightning (2010), and Vera Glagoleva’s multi-award winning and highly emotional World War II drama One War (2009).

Also watch out for the award-winning Everybody Dies But Me (2010), the stunning feature film debut from outspoken director Gai Germanica, which follows the turmoil and anxiety of three ordinary schoolgirls from suburban Moscow as they navigate the road from adolescence into adulthood.

If that’s not enough to satisfy your appetite for Russian culture, the festival will again be presenting its highly popular and in-depth retrospective, this year focusing on ‘World War II’. Nine films dating from 1957 - 2002 will present the most unforgettable and harrowing depictions of war. The acclaimed Ivan’s Childhood (1962) will make a return to Australian screens, along with the digitally remastered version of the 1975 biblical masterpiece, The Fought for their Motherland, from Oscar winning director Sergei Bondarchuk (War & Peace).
