Russian Resurrection Line-up Announced!

July 25th 2009 03:40
The final film-line up for the 2009 Russian Resurrection Film Festival has been announced, and what a tantalising assortment of Russian films there are.

2009 will see 19 films played in cinemas nationwide, including 10 recent award-winning and box office breaking releases that range from historical epics to moving dramas, from war adventures to comedies and musicals. As a special treat, the festival will host two premiere features; Soundtrack of Passion (2009), yet to be released even in Russia, and billed as Russia’s first ever sex-thriller, directed by Nikolai Lebedev from Wolfhound fame (2007 Opening Night film). As well, Karen Shakhnazarov (Director of 2008 Opening Night film, Vanished Empire and whose body of work was featured for the festival’s annual retrospective) will return again with the highly anticipated film Ward № 6 (2009), a black comedy based on a story by Anton Chekhov.

Other cinematic gems include the stunningly detailed turn of the century drama Morphine (2008), from exciting new director Aleksei Balabanov; and the box-office breaking and swashbuckling epic Taras Bulba (2009), directed by Vladimir Bortko, and based on the novel from one of Russia’s most celebrated writers Nikolai Gogol whose bicentenary is being celebrated in 2009. Also watch out for the award winning Hipsters (2009), the latest high energy musical comedy by Valery Todorovsky (Director of 2008’s hit film Vice); and Admiral (2008), an award winning historic epic directed by Andrei Kravchuk (Director of The Italian which featured at the 2007 festival).

If that’s not enough to satisfy your appetite for Russian culture, the festival will again be presenting it’s highly popular in-depth retrospective this year focusing on ‘Comedy & Musical Gems’. Nine films dating from 1936 - 2001 will present the best of Russian comedies, musicals and musical comedies, destined to lift the spirits of even the most cynical and vodka-swilling ex-party member!
