THE EYE OF THE STORM starring Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis & Charlotte Rampling has begun filming in Australia. The highly anticipated feature film based on the classic novel by Patrick White, Australia's only ever recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature (in 1973), is now shooting in Melbourne.
Directed by internationally acclaimed Australian director Fred Schepisi, this will be the first feature film he has shot in Australia since the Oscar nominated, Evil Angels (1988), starring Meryl Streep.
Schepisi's enormous critical and commercial success includes films such as The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith; Six Degrees of Separation, Last Orders and the series Empire Falls (Paul Newman's swan song).
THE EYE OF THE STORM brings together a stunning cast that includes Academy Award winner, Geoffrey Rush; Emmy, Golden Globe, BAFTA and AFI Award winner, Judy Davis; and multi-award winning actress Charlotte Rampling.
Supporting cast includes Alexandra Schepisi, Robyn Nevin, Colin Friels, John Gaden, and Helen Morse.
"It has been a while since I've filmed in Australia - but it's been a matter of waiting for the right story to tell, with the right people. The script for The Eye of The Storm and the cast and crew are absolutely world class, so this is an incredibly exciting project to be making in this country and well worth the wait to work at home again," said Fred Schepisi from Melbourne.
Over seven years in development, THE EYE OF THE STORM is set in the Sydney suburb of Centennial Park, where two nurses, a housekeeper and a solicitor attend to Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) as her expatriate son (Geoffrey Rush) and daughter (Judy Davis) convene at her deathbed. But, in dying, as in living, Mrs. Hunter remains a powerful force on those who surround her.
Based on Patrick White's Nobel Prize winning novel, THE EYE OF THE STORM is a savage exploration of family relationships - and the sharp undercurrents of love and hate, comedy and tragedy, which define them.
Principally shot in Melbourne, parts of the film will also be filmed in Sydney and far north Queensland. The script is written by Judy Morris (Babe: Pig in the City, Happy Feet).
THE EYE OF THE STORM will be distributed by Transmission Films, who have recently distributed the successful Australian films Samson & Delilah, Balibo, My Year Without Sex, Charlie & Boots, and Beneath Hill 60.
As Screen Australia was unable to find funding approval for Australia's only Nobel Proze winning novel THE EYE OF THE STORM is privately funded, has finance from Media Funds Management and support from Film Victoria.
THE EYE OF THE STORM is expected to release internationally in 2011.
