Screen Australia have announced investment in 13 new projects including three feature films, three TV drama series, one telemovie, two children’s TV series and four documentaries. Screen Australia’s investment of nearly $15 million in the 13 productions will trigger production worth $72 million.
Feature films to receive Screen Australia investment include Fred Schepisi’s The Eye of the Storm. Based on the novel by Nobel Prize–winning author, Patrick White, The Eye of the Storm is a savage exploration of family relationships. The film is executive produced by Jonathan Shteinman, Edward Simpson, Bob Marcs and James Vernon and produced by Antony Waddington, Gregory Read and Fred Schepisi. Judy Morris wrote the adaptation.
Director Cate Shortland and producers Liz Watts, Karsten Stöter, Benny Drechsel, Paul Welsh and Gabriele Kranzelbinder were supported to make Lore. An official German-Australian co-production, Lore tells the story of five children who embark on a journey in the spring of 1945 that challenges every notion we have of family, love and friendship. The film is written by Cate Shortland and Robin Mukherjee.
Award-winning short filmmaker Kieran Darcy-Smith received approval for his debut feature, Say Nothing. The film is written by Kieran Darcy-Smith and Felicity Price and produced by Angie Fielder.
Among the television series that Screen Australia committed funds to are The Slap, a bold, provocative drama that forensically examines the mores and morality of contemporary middle-class life. Based on Christos Tsiolkas’ best-selling novel, the series is executive produced by Penny Chapman, associate produced by Christos Tsiolkas and produced by
Helen Bowden, Michael McMahon and Tony Ayres. Episodes will be written by Alice Bell, Kris Mrksa, Emily Ballou, Brendan Cowell and Cate Shortland, and directed by Jessica Hobbs, Robert Connolly, Cate Shortland and Tony Ayres.
Cleo, a television series which explores the Whitlam era through the eyes of Cleo magazine and its young editor, Ita Buttrose, was approved for investment. The series is produced by John Edwards and Imogen Banks, written by Christopher Lee and directed by Emma Freeman.
Blood Brother (p: David Taylor, David Maher, w: John Misto), a dramatic account of the 1993 Gilham family murders, and Spirited 2 (p: John Edwards, Jacquelin Perske, Claudia Karvan, w: Jacquelin Perske, d: Jessica Hobbs), the second series about a love story between a rock star ghost and a dentist, were also approved for investment.
Screen Australia also announced development approval for nine feature films including new projects to be directed by Bruce Beresford, Sarah Watt and Phillip Noyce.
