SYNOPSIS:
SECOND-HAND WEDDING is an intimate, endearing look at the relationships within a middle-class New Zealand family.

Set in the present, this bittersweet dramatic-comedy tells the story of Jill Rose (Geraldine Brophy), a mother who has spent years preparing for her daughter Cheryl’s eventual wedding by sourcing second-hand bargains to be used on the ‘big’ day. But Jill’s bargain hunting has left Cheryl (Holly Shanahan) with a dilemma. How can she tell her mother that she doesn’t want the happiest day of her life turned into a ‘second-hand wedding’?

Jill keeps the dream alive until she is forced to confront the habits of a lifetime and concede that no bargain is worth her daughter's happiness. Father of the bride, Brian, quips that Cheryl's upcoming wedding will be the first time anyone in the Rose family has given something away.

Afraid of what may happen, Cheryl decides to plan her wedding her way –

even if it means keeping Mother out!

REVIEW:
Why wouldn’t you feel sorry for the young bride-to-be. Newly engaged she is too scared to tell her mother because she knows that her mother will try and take over. Every brides worst nightmare is about to become a reality for this young couple.

Fortunately, SECOND HAND WEDDING doesn’t try to be too clever. The usual clichés are amusing even if they are a little too predictable. This film starts off with bargain hunter Jill and her best mate Muffy(??) running around to all the local garage sales. Audiences might initially wonder what they have walked in to, but somehow the film is able to hold your attention through this slow beginning before it begins the horr.

Geraldine Brophy is delightful as the well meaning but over eager mother Jill who is too easily offended. What could have been a slightly embarrassing send-up of every suburban mum is handled beautifully and audiences will definitely relate in a positive way to the drama unfolding between mother and daughter. Holly Shanahan as the daughter Cheryl, too embarrassed to let her mother know about the wedding lest she become a bargain basement bride is for the most part terrific if at times a little too melodramatic

Patrick Wilson as the devoted father and husband caught between a rock and a hard place manages not to become a sad and pathetic shadow while Ryan O’Kane as the supportive fiancé and Tina Regtien as the effervescent Muffy round out a fun and quirky ensemble cast. Some of the minor support characters may disappoint slightly, but the enthusiasm and charm of the overall film covers for what might otherwise have been an annoyance.

You won’t get any major surprises but you will walk away with a smile on your face. And make sure you stay around for the end of the credits to find out why that strange little man keeps stealing the garage sale signs.
