September 18th 2010 08:19
The Pusan International Film Festival in Korea has selected six Australian feature films and an Australian short to screen in 2010.

Oranges and Sunshine (d: Jim Loach, w: Rona Munro, p: Emile Sherman, Camilla Bray, Iain Canning) will screen in the World Cinema section along with Dreamland (w/d: Ivan Sen, p: David Jowsey) and Wasted on the Young (w/d: Ben C Lucas, p: Janelle Landers, Aidan O’Bryan). Pusan represents the world premiere of Oranges and Sunshine, the story of a social worker who uncovers the organised deportation of children in care from the United Kingdom to Australia. The film stars Emily Watson, David Wenham and Hugo Weaving.

Lou (w/d/p: Belinda Chayko, p: Helen Bowden, Michael McMahon, Tony Ayres) has been selected for the festival’s competitive Flash Forward section that presents first or second films of up-and-coming filmmakers from non-Asian countries.

Pusan’s Midnight Passion program has selected Red Hill (w/d/p: Patrick Hughes, p: Al Clark) and The Reef (w/d/p: Andrew Traucki, p: Michael Robertson). Midnight Passion presents films of diverse genres selected for entertainment value from all over the world.

The short film The Kiss (w/d: Ashlee Page, p: Sonya Humphrey) will have its international premiere in the Wide Angle section.

“It’s great to see such an exciting line-up of Australian films screening at Pusan, which has established itself as one of Asia’s most dynamic film events,” said Ross Matthews, Screen Australia’s Head of Production Investment. “2011 is the official Australia–Korea Year of Friendship and we look forward to celebrating and strengthening ties with the Korean screen industry at this year’s festival and market.”

A strong contingent of Australian filmmakers is expected to attend Pusan including Ross Matthews who is speaking at the Asian Film Policy Forum. Screen Australia is also organising an industry networking event co-hosted by the Australian Embassy.

Pusan International Film Festival will run 7–15 October 2010.
