Shopfront Screenings in Cambridge.

June 6th 2009 04:36
Next Thursday 11 June is the first People's Cinema Shopfront Screenings, turning the former Habitat building on 17 Fitzroy Street into a unique cinema space.

From outside, you'll be able to view a programme of imaginative shorts, gems from the East Anglian Film Archive and work by local students - all completely free of charge!

Screenings will run from approx. 9.00am to 9.00pm until 28 June.

People's Cinema is just the start of a whole series of outdoor screenings this summer: on the August bank holiday weekend (30-31 August), bringing an inflatable screen to Grantchester Meadows and in September back on the banks of the river Cam and on Magdalene Street.
Call for Entries

Interested in getting involved in People's Cinema? Would you like to have your own short film screened in an empty shop? The trust is looking to promote local creative talent so if you'd like to submit a work on the topic of your choice, then the only conditions are that it lasts no more than three minutes and is suitable for all viewers.

Visit the new People's Cinema website for full details.

Women's Word

As part of Lucy Cavendish College Women’s Word Festival (13-28 June 2009), the Trust has programmed a special cinematic tribute to women’s love, image and vision called Women’s View. Over three weekends in June, we'll be screening three great films at the Arts Picturehouse: MAIDENS IN UNIFORM, RED ROAD and THE WOMEN.:

Sunday 14 June, 2.30
Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell – The Women.

MAIDENS IN UNIFORM (MÄDCHEN IN UNIFORM) (PG)
Director: Leontine Sagan. Starring: Hertha Thiele, Dorothea Wieck, Emilia Unda. Germany 1931. 84 mins. German with English subtitles.
An innovative and bold plea for freedom and one of the earliest narrative films to portray homosexuality explicitly, this iconic film tells the story of a teenager at a strict boarding school who develops a romantic attachment to one of her teachers.
The film will be introduced by writer Ali Smith.
Saturday 20 June, 2.30

RED ROAD (18)
Director: Andrea Arnold. Starring: Kate Dickie, Tony Curran, Natalie Press. UK 2006. 114 mins.
A female CCTV operator becomes obsessed with following one particular man through the cameras that span the city, for seemingly mysterious reasons. The tension builds as her quest takes her beyond the safety of her viewing room.
Director Andrea Arnold has been invited to the screening.
Sunday 28 June, 2.30

THE WOMEN (U)
Director: George Cukor. Starring: Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell. USA 1939. 133 mins.
Focusing on a privileged Park Avenue set intruded upon by a bitchy, gold-digging perfume counter salesgirl, this classic all-female comedy shows women dealing with the curveballs thrown at them by both the men in their lives and each other.

The film will be introduced by Isabelle McNeill of the Cambridge Film Trust.
