SONY TROPFEST is no longer!

The team at TROPFEST announced recently that their major sponsor SONY Australia has decided to part ways with the World’s largest Short Film Festival after a partnership of five years which has also resulted in John Polson moving TROPFEST over to a sister festival in New York with TROPFEST/ NY.
“Since Sony began its sponsorship of Tropfest in November 2003, the film festival has gone from strength to strength,” said Toby Barbour, Head of Strategy and Brand Development for Sony Australia.
“From our modest beginnings in the Tropicana cafe in 1993, to The Domain in Sydney and an audience of over 150,000 nationwide, our growth could not have been possible without Sony’s undying enthusiasm. We are enormously grateful for all of their support over the years,” said John Polson, Founder and Director of Tropfest.
The naming rights sponsor includede a range of initiatives added to the festival over the years under the SONY name including ROUGHCUT filmmaking seminars during the year, Promotion of HD technology, gaming stations and the promotion of SMS and MMS activations and competitons on site at the festival itself. The festival itself has also been able to tap into the junior talent with last year being the very first TROPFEST JR held the in the mid afternoon only a short walk away from the major festival itself.
Also recently with the rise of animated movies making it big on the silver screen with the likes of FINDING NEMO and HAPPY FEET 2007 saw the first win for an animated film at TROPFEST with the prize going to Steve Baker for his highly entertaing short “An Imainary Life’ with the award being rpesented by the eventual winner for Best Animation at the following ACADEMY AWARDS in 2007 Dr George Miller.
With all eight capital cities and 7 regional cities now screening the evening live and broadcast on free to air, mobile and online, the festivals new naming rights sponsors cable tv’s MOVIE EXTRA which is part of the Movie Network on FOX has a big job ahead of them as the festival heads towards its third decade.

A live television broadcast, planned for 2009, will enable Australians to experience the festival atmosphere regardless of their location. The broadcast will also include components such as exclusive red carpet highlights, celebrity interviews and screening of all 16 finalist films as well as the awards ceremony.
“This is an amazing opportunity for filmmakers to reach new audiences through Movie Extra. The festival will for the first time come to life in homes, bars and clubs all over the country – making it a truly national event,” continued Mr. Polson.
Additionally, Tropfest filmmakers will also have the opportunity to have their films broadcast on Movie Extra channel in the lead up to the festival and throughout the year.
MOVIE EXTRA has for a long time been a supporter of TROPFEST including te funding of the TROPFEST Feature Program which brought about the production and release of the feature film ‘SEPTEMBER’ AND SCREEENED AT Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals.
