SPAA Fringe & SDA launch nationwide search.

Calling all filmmakers - Pitch your way to production for best new screen projects

SPAA Fringe, Australia's leading event for aspiring filmmakers, will catapult six of the best, new screen projects into the limelight through their pitching initiative, the SDA Pitching Competition. Screen Development Australia (SDA), the national network of screen resource organisations and SPAA Fringe have launched a nationwide search to uncover the best projects in the country, from a series of state-based pitching workshops and competitions.

The pitching workshops and competitions, which are being held in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Hobart, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Northern Rivers from May to October, will act as a 'heat' and offer a fast and furious exchange of ideas and feedback.

The semi-finalists from the pitching workshops will then be flown to Sydney in October to pitch their projects to a panel of film and television executives at SPAA Fringe.

Up for grabs is a total prize pool of $10,000. Two finalists will be selected and will win $1,500 each. They will then be flown back to Sydney in November, to pitch their projects head-to-head in the Holding Redlich Pitching Competition at the SPAA Conference. The winner of the Holding Redlich Pitching Competition will go on to receive a return airfare for one to the Cannes Film Festival or a TV Market in 2010/11 and a $1,500 cash prize plus free registration to SPAA 2011 Conference.

"This event is a step-by-step pathway for filmmakers to get closer to turning their film or TV project into a reality. It starts with the SDA Pitching Competition, feeds into SPAA Fringe, and then SPAA Conference. Even if you don't win - the exposure is priceless. Our ultimate goal is to get likeminded directors and producers in front of industry decision-makers. The SDA Pitching Competition is a fast track, but for others there is still SPAA Fringe itself with its one-on-one meetings and networking events," says Gaylee Butler, SPAA Fringe Director.

Recent success stories include Cate McQuillen, who travelled to Kidscreen Summit in New York after winning the Holding Redlich Pitching Competition, where she pitched the now internationally acclaimed children's TV series, dirtgirlworld. Feature film Secret of Moonacre, helmed by award-winning Hungarian director Gabor Csupo was picked up after it was pitched and went into production in 2007.

"People talk about being in the right place at the right time, and SPAA Fringe creates just this. But if you can't communicate your idea clearly, it is an opportunity lost. The pitching workshops and state-based competitions provide a vital role in bringing filmmakers' pitches to a professional standard, ready to pitch to key television executives and distributors" says Graeme Sward, Chair, Screen Development Australia.

Entrants may pitch any genre, form and duration from TV series to features, animation and multi-platform content and are encouraged to present projects which have strong commercial viability.

SPAA Fringe is the leading event for educating and connecting Australia's up and coming film, television and online sector. SPAA Fringe will be held at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney on 22 and 23 October.

An interactive two-day conference aimed at those who are serious about building a career in the Australian screen industry, the event is comprised of workshops, roundtables, one-on-one sessions, panel discussions, film screenings and social networking events.
