Sunday 27 July
DAYS OF HEAVEN THE FORBIDDEN PLANET
DAYS OF HEAVEN (PG)
USA/1978/95mins/35mm
Written and Directed by Terrence Malick.
Set in 1916 America, Bill (Gere) a Labourer from Chicago travels to Texas with his girlfriend and younger sister to escape a murder charge. They are hired as seasonal workers on a wheat farm and when Bill discovers the rich owner is dying they plot to exploit him.
Starring Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard and Landa Manz.
FORBIDDEN PLANET (M)
USA/1956/99mins/35mm
Director Fred Wilcox.
A spaceship arrives on a remote planet; uninhabited save for Dr Morbius, his Daughter and their Robot. Based on Shakespeare's The Tempest and Oscar-nominated for it's ground breaking special effects, this is a landmark in science fiction cinema. Both the Robot and the flying saucer were such an investment for the studio that they would be reused for years to come in various films and TV shows; meaning that they became familiar (and cliché) icons of 50's Sci-fi.
Starring Anne Frances, Walter Pigeon, Leslie Neilson and Robby the Robot.
