Sydney Film Festival 2008 Announces Jury

Direct from the Cannes Film Festival on May 19 was the announcement of the Jury President and two members of the five strong panel for this inaugural Official Competition. NSW Minister The Hon. Linda Burney MP announced that award-winning Australian director Gillian Armstrong will be Jury President and will be joined by Iranian director/writer/producer Majid Majidi and Hong Kong producer Nansun Shi. The final two jury members are yet to be announced.
Sydney Film Festival Executive Director Clare Stewart, said today from Cannes, “Gillian Armstrong, Majid Majidi and Nansun Shi are world-class filmmakers who bring a compelling range of sensibilities and expertise to the Jury, and who are well placed to reward audacious, cutting-edge and courageous filmmaking.”
The 12 Official Competition films are:
3 World Premieres:
Vincent Ward’s Rain of the Children (New Zealand),
Nash Edgerton’s The Square (Australia)
Matthew Newton’s Three Blind Mice (Australia);
9 Australian Premieres:
Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky (UK)
Steve McQueen’s Hunger (UK),
Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges (UK/Belgium),
Fernando Eimbcke’s Lake Tahoe (Mexico),
Guy Maddin’sMy Winnipeg (Canada),
Antonello Grimaldi’s Quiet Chaos (Italy),
Carlos Reygadas’ Silent Light (Mexico/France/The Netherlands),
Kimberly Peirce’s Stop-Loss (USA),
Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Tokyo Sonata (Japan/The Netherlands/Hong Kong).
Jury member Nansun Shi and representatives of the 12 films were at Cannes to hear the announcement, including Fernando Eimbcke (Director/Co-writer, Lake Tahoe), Matthew Newton (Director/Writer/Actor, Three Blind Mice), Joel Edgerton (Co-writer/Actor, The Square), Domenico Procacci (Producer, Quiet Chaos), Laura Hastings-Smith (Producer, Hunger) and Yukie Kito (Producer, Tokyo Sonata).
Festival 55 which will run from June 4 to 22 will award the $60,000 Sydney Film Prize on June 16 at the Sydney Opera House and is the first Australian Film Festival to have a FIAPF-accredited Competition.

Sydney Film Festival screens feature films, documentaries, short films and animations across the city at State Theatre, Greater Union George Street Cinemas, Metro Theatre and Dendy Opera Quays. The festival is a major event on the New South Wales cultural calendar and is one of the world’s longest running film festivals. In 2008, SFF introduces the inaugural Official International Competition, a FIAPF-accredited competition for ‘new directions in film’, which rewards courageous and audacious filmmaking.
The 55th Sydney Film Festival opens on Wednesday 4 June 2008, with the Official Competition red carpet galas screening for the first 12 days, culminating in an Awards ceremony on Monday 16 June. The Closing Night Gala is on Saturday 21 June with the festival finishing on Sunday 22 June.
