World Film Festivals - by SimonC

SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL OFFICIALLY INTERNATIONAL.

April 15th 2008 06:01
The Sydney Film Festival is Australia's only film festival to have a FIAPF-accredited Official Competition*. From the 2008 festival onwards, 12 films from around the world will be selected to compete for a cash prize of $60,000. Festival Patron Dr George Miller (Director Happy Feet, Mad Max, Babe) and The Minister for the Arts, the Hon Frank Sartor launched the Official International Competition in September 2007.
The new prize will reward 'new directions in film', and will bring an additional 12 red-carpet gala premieres to the festival program line-up each year with many more international guests heading to Sydney to be part pf the new initiative.

The New South Wales Government have pledged substantial multi-year support which will attract the cream of the film industry to Sydney, and allow plenty of cross-pollination and business opportunities for local filmmakers.
The annual prize of $60,000 is the most significant cash prize for film in Australia and is generously sponsored by SFF principal sponsor Hunter Hall Investment Management.

The Official Competition will screen 12 features from all around the world as red carpet premieres throughout the festival. The Jury will be made up of three prominent international and two Australian film industry members. With the festival hosting guest filmmakers and industry executives from around the globe to augment the screenings of their films with public Q&As and career masterclasses, there will be plenty more on offer for audiences from 2008 onwards.

Publicity for the Sydney Film Festival stated “Films will be selected for the competition on the bases that they demonstrate 'new directions in film', and will all screen as Australian premieres. Selected movies will all 'have emotional power and resonance; are audacious, cutting edge and courageous; and go beyond the usual treatment of their subject matter'.”

*FIAPF, the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, is the regulator of international film festivals, and has given SFF accreditation internationally as a 'specialised competitive festival'. Until 2007, Sydney Film Festival was accredited as a non-competitive film festival.
