SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL READY TO ROLL.

At the recent launch of the 55th Sydney Film Festival at Customs House Circular Quay, Executive Director Clare Stewart proudly announced the program for this years festival which will play host to some of the worlds most renowned filmmakers alongside some of the finest film talent in Australia today.
With 16 World Premieres, 135 Australian Premieres and a plethora of red carpet galas throughout the 19 day festival held from June 4 -22 the festival programme has been divided into different categories so that festival goers can pick and choose between the numerous categories including WORLD VIEWS, RED HOT DOCS, KIDS’ FILMS, SOUND ON SCREEN AND APOCALYPSE AGAIN.
And after 54 years, making Sydney one of the oldest festivals throughout the entire world, it is just reward that the festival officially joins the likes of Cannes, Berlin and Toronto on the list of certified International Festivals. In 2008, SFF introduces the inaugural Official International Competition, a FIAPF-accredited competition for ‘new directions in film’, which rewards courageous and audacious filmmaking.
Clare Stewart, Executive Director of Sydney Film Festival said today. “This year, filmmakers have increasingly urgent stories to tell about the state of our world and their responses take many forms – lyrical, challenging, imaginative, entertaining and direct. Sydney audiences will find this richness and diversity on show throughout their festival, enhanced by the expanded participation of International and Australian filmmaking talent made possible through the introduction of our very first Official Competition.”
UK Director Mike Leigh will be in attendance at he Opening Night Gala on Wednesday June 4 with his latest film HAPPY GO LUCKY for which Sally Hawkins won the award for best actress at this years Berlin Film Festival . The film is one of 12 films in the inaugural Official Competition which features a $60,000 cash purse presented by the principal sponsor Hunter Hall and supported by the State Government of New South Wales
On Monday the 9th of June Dreamworks Animation presents direct from this months screening at Cannes the eagerly awaited KUNG FU PANDA with CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and Hollywood Actor Jack Black in attendance and walking the red carpet. The magic continues Monday June 16 at the famous Sydney Opera House with the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films as well as the announcement of the official competition.The festival will then host it’s closing night Gala on Saturday the 21st with the Australian Premiere of Academy Award animation nominee PERSEPOLIS (Marjene Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud) before officially closing on Sunday the 22nd.
“This is THE year of film for Sydney and given the calibre of films screening in Official Competition, film-lovers will be the winners!” President of the SFF Virginia Gordon said. She was also quick to thank Sydney “for their valued support and engagement on Sydney’s place in the world.”
This years festival will also host an extremely impressive line up of International and local filmmakers to take part in an informative and entertaining schedule of talks, forums and events providing what festival organisers describe as an essential hub for the film industry.
The Sydney Film Festival screens feature films, documentaries, short films and animations across the city at State Theatre, Greater Union George Street Cinemas, Metro Theatre and Dendy Opera Quays.The awards ceremony will be held at he Sydney Opera House.
