THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! AGAIN!!
Would you believe that it has been 5 years since the first incredibly successful Russian invasion? Well it’s back again at the Chauvel Cinema in Paddington and this year its even bigger than the past four combined! After last years huge year where audience attendance was up by more than 55% it seems that audiences have taken a shine to both the films and culture of the Russian Federation.
"To date the Russian Resurrection Film Festival has screened over 50 new films, and more than 18 classic and rare films that people otherwise would not have an opportunity to see."
Nicholas Maksymow, Festival Director.
Already confirmed for this years festival is the outstanding VICE which tells the story of fashion-conscious Russian youths seduced by the fast money of the drug world. Directed by Valery Todorovsky whose previous screenings MY STEPBROTHER FRANKENSTEIN and THE LOVER were definite audience favourites.
Other impressive films that will be screened over the 12 days of the festival beginning October 29 and running until November 9 include SIMPLE THINGS (07) by Aleksei Popogrebsky a drama about family and relationships (Winner of the Grand Prix for best film, Best Director and Best Actor at the 18th Kinotavr Film Festival as well as the latest film by Karen Shakhnazarov, Vanished Empire(08).
The Russian Resurrection Film Festival has also recently announced the inclusion of Andrei Zvyagintev's moving and mysterious film, The Banishment (2007), his follow up feature to the multi award winning and devastating film, The Return (which screened nationally across Australia with much acclaim). The Banishment was nominated for the Palme D'Or at Cannes, received the Best Actor Award at Cannes in 2007 as well as receiving Best Film (Russian Federation Film Club Award) at the Moscow International Film Festival.
In addition to the line up of contemporary films on show at this years festival, the organisers are extremely excited to showcase two retrospectives featuring past cinematic treats. The first, the Russian Fantasia Retrospective will focus on classic soviet Science Fiction films, for which one of the all time great cult classics, Amphibian Man (1962) directed by Vladimir Chebotaryov and Gennadi Kazansky, will head the line-up. A virtually unclassifiable nautical fantasy, this amazing retro piece combines seafaring adventure, romance, monstrous fantasy, water choreography and tragedy into a strange, beguiling dream of a film
On a different note, the Festival will also look back to explore the work of one of the masters of 1980s soviet cinema, Director Karen Shakhnazarov whose career has spanned 25 years and still going strong. As a sneak into the line-up it is confirmed that his classic Zero City (1988) will be part of this celebration of cinematic classics. Also featuring will be his latest film, Vanished Empire (2008), which as the culmination of his work to date will represent the jewel in the crown of this extremely exciting expose of one of Russia's most celebrated Directors. Vanished Empire takes a warm and very real look at young love set against the background of student life in the 1970's.
In 2007, the love for Russian cinema expanded beyond the eastern seaboard to take in Perth and Adelaide, featuring ten of the best and finest Russian films, six of which were international multi-award winning films, and several Russian box office smashes, including the spectacular vampire fantasy Day Watch and the internationally critically acclaimed and multi-award winning drama The Island. From the sword and sorcery fantasy of Wolfhound to the satirical journey of the Stalinist propaganda troupe in Beat the Enemy, last years Russian Resurrection Film Festival certainly delivered a wonderfully diverse line-up of films that played as a resounding testament to the strength of this unique film culture.
Once again the opening night celebrations will be supported by the wonderfully warming taste of Stolichnaya Vodka as the Balalaikas and Cossack Warriors entertain everyone throughout the evening.
Stay tuned for more announcements, including the final film line-up, visiting special guest Directors, and gala events celebrating Russian cinema and culture as only Russians know how.
