The Tokyo International Film Festival announced today Alan Ladd as the President of the Jury for the 20th Tokyo International Film Festival. (October 20- 28). Ladd has distinguished himeself over five decades as an innovative and groundbreaking producer. In 1973 Ladd took over the reins at 20th Century Fox and soonb commisioned George Lucas to begin work on the script for STAR WARS which is now a billion dollar industry in itself.
In 1979 He created The Ladd Company another success story in its own right with Ridley Scotts BLADE RUNNER just one hugely successful film produced by his company.
After 6 years he then dissolved The Ladd Company to run MGM/UA and continues to be a strong influence in the film industry. His knowledge and perceptive insights should be one of the highlights of this years festival.
Lord David Puttnam who has strong associations with TIFF was chosen to recieve this years Akira Kurosawa Award,. Puttnam served as President of the International Competition for the 1st Tokyo International Film Festival. ‘Looking back on my long career, I can honestly say that the week spent Chairing the Jury at the first Tokyo International Film Festival counts among the most challenging, enjoyable and ultimately satisfying of my entire life.’ Puttnam joyfully announced
Puttnam like Ladd has had a long career producing cinematic success stories. From 1986-88 he was Chairman and CEO of Columbia Pictures, the only non-American to ever hold the position. IN 1995 he was knighted and in 1997 was admitted as a member of The House of Lords in the United Kingdom.
