VENICE FESTIVAL COMES TO A CLOSE

64th Venice Film Festival


For the second time Ang Lee has triumphed taking home the Golden Lion at this years Venice Film Festival with his sexually explicit thriller Se, Jie (Lust, Caution). The award continues Lee’s success at the festival after winning the same award for the 2005 award winning film Brokeback Mountain. He dedicated his award to Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, who died in July.

The awards ceremony which took place at the Pallazzo di Cinema brought to a close the 64th Annual Venice Film Festival which lauded Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci with a special award THE GOLDEN LION OF THE 75th ANNIVERSARY for his body of work which includes Last Tango In Paris and The Last Emperor.

Heath Ledger accepted the award on behalf of Cate Blanchett was the queen of this years festival taking home the Best Actress award for her role as Bob Dylan in the biopic I’m Not There. Brad Pitt took home Best Actor for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Rober t Ford.

"I could try to play it down, but it's great fun” laughed Pitt who is at the Toronto Film Festival promoting his new film. "The nicest thing is how excited my friends are for me and to be amongst the lineage of people that have also been bestowed this honour. It's a really nice honour."

Other winners included Brian De Palma, for Best Direction in Iraq War drama Redacted and British director Ken Loach - Best Screenplay for It's A Free World.


For the second time in the history of the Mostra (exhibition), all feature films screened were World Premieres.

Hafsia HERZI in the film LA GRAINE ET LE MULET by Abdellatif KECHICHE (France)

OSELLA for Best Cinematography to:
Rodrigo PRIETO director of photography for the SE, JIE (LUST, CAUTION) di Ang LEE (USA/China/China, Taiwan)

OSELLA for Best Screenplay to:
