WELCOME director to attend French Film Festival
February 5th 2010 01:50
Palace Films is pleased to announce that director Philippe Lioret will be visiting Australia to support the national release of his acclaimed and multi-award winning drama WELCOME.
The tour will include Sydney and Melbourne beginning Monday March 15 to Thursday March 18. Mr. Lioret's visit will include appearances at premiere screenings of WELCOME, which will be held within the 2010 Alliance Française French Film Festival ahead of the film's release on 1 April. He will also be available for interviews.
After premiering to acclaim and two prizes at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, WELCOME was also awarded the prestigious Lux Prize for Cinema by the European Parliament and the Lumiere Award for Best Film, along with an astonishing ten César nominations, including Best Film and Best Director.
WELCOME tells the story of 17-year-old Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), who has spent three months travelling illegally across Europe in an attempt to reunite with his girlfriend in England, where he hopes for a better life. His journey comes to a halt in Calais on the far northern coast of France where constant surveillance by French authorities prevents him from going further. Here he meets Simon (Vincent Lindon) who impulsively risks everything by taking Bilal under his wing.
Upon its release in France last year, WELCOME earned major critical attention and helped trigger an intense public debate over the hard-line immigration policies of the Sarkozy government. Driven by strong audience reaction, the film became one of the biggest box office hits of the year, achieving over 1.2 million admissions.
Co-written by Lioret, Emmanuel Courcol and Olivier Adam, and produced by Christophe Rossignon, WELCOME is Lioret's sixth feature, his previous films include DON"T WORRY, I'M FINE (2006), THE LIGHT (2004), MADEMOISELLE (2001), TENUE CORRECTE EXIGÉE (1997), and LOST IN TRANSIT (1993).
Mr. Lioret's visit to Australia is made possible through the generous assistance of Unifrance.
Winners of the 2010 César Awards will be announced on February 27 in Paris.
