And to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Russias first successful launch and re-entry in the history of the space race, for the first time ever, the festival will include the Australian premiere of a Russian 3D animated film, with special screenings of Belka & Strelka – Space Dogs (2010). Based on the true story of how the Soviet Union sent two dogs into space in 1960, the film’s release marks the 50th anniversary of their successful intergalactic odyssey and captures the nostalgic atmosphere of post-WWII Russia when a brighter future was in sight. This witty and wonderful film tells the story of the two dogs who were chosen to pilot the mission to space, Belka; a circus performing dog who yearns for fame and fortune, and Strelka; a homeless dog dreaming of one day finding her father.
Also new to the festival roster is superhero film Black Lightning (2009), produced by Timur Bekmambetov of Hollywood block-busters Wanted (2008) and Night Watch (2004) acclaim. Touted as Back to the Future meets Spiderman, the film tells the story of a Moscow University student who unexpectedly finds himself the owner of a flying car. But with the power to avoid peak-hour traffic, comes great responsibility as the city’s anonymous hero.
Already confirmed is Miracle (2009) from festival-favourite director, Alexander Proshkin, (The Captain’s Daughter (2000)) starring renowned actor Konstantin Khabenskiy from last year’s smash hit The Admiral (2008), as well as the Day Watch (2006) and Night Watch (2004) vampire cult classics. The film is based on real and mysterious events surrounding an alleged incident where a young woman who danced with a religious icon was frozen into immobility. This brilliant political satire strips apart the social taboos that were coming out of deep freeze immediately after the death of Stalin, when the ‘people’s president’ Krushchev came to power.
2010 marks the 65th anniversary of the end of WWII. In recognition of this the festival will also include a comprehensive WWII retrospective of 12 films featuring Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or winner The Cranes Are Flying (1957), the newly remastered version of Bondarchuk’s 1975 classic They Fought For Their Motherland and Ivan’s Childhood (1962), the first feature film from multiple award winning director Andre Tarkovsky and winner of the Golden Lion, Venice Film Festival.
